About Essay Residencies:
Essay Residencies are artistic residencies in the field of visual arts in relation to performance, happening, music and dance, that take place in Maus Hábitos.

This residencies were design by Saco Azul with the intention of creating an exchange program with european art education institutions, through short residencies that finish with a public presentation or open studio.

Essay’s residencies goal is to develop new relations between visual arts and performance arts and are aimed at students and teachers of the institutions for witch they are held.

This is the 2nd edition for member of the Fine Arts University in Porto. The 1st one took place in December 2015 for which the selected proposal was produced by Giusepe Botelho and Tata Coutinho. The 2nd edition of the Essay Residencies for FBAUP members will take place from September 26 to 30 and and will finish with a public presentation in October 1st 2016.


1. Goals
This regulation’s main goal is to present an individual or group proposal in the context of contemporary art developed in the field of Performance, Happening, Dance and Music in relation with visual arts.

2. Participants
This open call is meant to students and/or teachers of FBAUP. Erasmus students included.

3. Residency
This residency will take place in Exhibition Room in Maus Hábitos, between September 26th and 30th - the artist, group or collective will have free access to the Exhibition Room. It ends with a public presentation at October 1st.

4. Open Call process:
4.1. Open until September 18th at 12am.
4.2. Participants should present
a) A clear understanding project abstract, with maximum 300 words. It is permitted to attach important documents or images to a better comprehension. The project can be structured with more than one moment, as long as it has substance.
b) Registration form properly filled
c) Updated on-line portfolio link
d) Copy of 2016/2017 FBAUP registration or other certificate
4.3. All documents must be zipped and sent to carmo.osul@maushabitos.com

5. Selection of applicants
5.1. The selection jury is composed by:
Maus Hábitos’ CEO and Saco Azul Associação Cultural’s President, Daniel Pires; Maus Hábitos’ CEO, Consultant and Art Critic, Rui Mascarenhas; Maus Hábitos’ CEO, artist and dancer, Marianne Baillot; and Maus Hábitos/Saco Azul artistic programmer and producer and artist Carmo Osul.
5.2. There is no appeal to the jury’s decision.
5.3. The selected proposal will be announced at September 21th (2016).

6. Benefits
6.1. Free access to Maus Hábitos installations, equipment and material to project development, as well as access to Exhibition Room during residency until presentation day.
6.2. Saco Azul Associação Cultural commitment to conceptual and technical orientation, if needed.
6.3. Saco Azul Associação Cultural commitment to support material needs with 200€ budget, as long as paid invoices are presented (with properly filled data of Saco Azul).
6.4. Discount on meals in Vícios de Mesa (Maus Hábitos) during residency time.

7. Obligations
7.1. Project’s development and conclusion must happen in Maus Hábitos.
7.2. The project must fit schedule, equipment and Maus Hábitos’ space availability.
7.3. Promotion and diffusion of this artistic residency and its producers when presenting the project, its texts, documents, images and actions, as well as promotion and logo addition of producers in post-diffusion of the project.
